Investigate Disappearance of Chinese Journalist

Target: China’s Minister of Justice Wu Aiying

Goal: Investigate the disappearance and potential abduction of outspoken journalist Jia Jia.

A Chinese journalist may have become the most recent victim of a movement from the Communist party to silence dissenters and limit free speech after he reportedly disappeared as he was flying from Beijing to Hong Kong. Jia Jia, a reporter with outspoken beliefs and a large Twitter following, failed to appear at a scheduled lunch meeting and his friends and family are concerned that he has been abducted by government officials.

Jia’s disappearance and alleged detention seem to be connected to a recent letter calling for the resignation of Chinese president Xi Jinping. Jia is an associate of the editor responsible for publishing the letter, and friends say that in the time leading up to his disappearance, the reporter voiced his concerns about being investigated and potentially detained.

Whether or not the Chinese government is involved in this situation, it has a duty to investigate the apparent disappearance of an outspoken member of the press. Across the country, professors, journalists, and activists have been facing pressure and even jail time for expressing dissent, but the vanishing and possible abduction of a citizen represents a new level of oppression. China owes Jia’s family and the public at large an investigation. Sign the petition below to demand a formal inquiry into this matter.

Dear Minister,

The recent disappearance of journalist Jia Jia, in light of recent crackdowns on outspoken individuals, demands the attention of your office. Jia voiced concerns about being followed and investigated, and his disappearance only serves to validate his concern. His family and friends, as well as the Chinese public, are owed an explanation. Regardless of government involvement in this matter, the sudden vanishing of a prominent journalist and Chinese citizen is a serious issue, and I urge you to launch an investigation into this matter.
