Target: President of Honduras Juan Orlando Hernández Alvarado
Goal: Justice for murdered environmental activist Nelson García.
Community leader and environmental activist Nelson García was murdered not far from his home in Rio Chiquito, Honduras. The attack comes on the heels of the eviction of 150 families from the area where García was leading an occupation of the land, claiming property rights. García was a member of the Civic Council of Popular and Indigenous organizations of Honduras, the same organization as recently slain activist Berta Cáceres.
Honduran authorities claim that the shooting had nothing to do with the evictions, but local sources dispute those claims and others regarding the circumstances of the removal of families from the area. Promises were made of peaceful action, but on the day in question authorities tore down houses and destroyed maize, yuca plantations and banana trees.
Environmentalists and indigenous activists in Honduras are in danger as lucrative investments and development in the region create incentives to push people off their lands by any means necessary. Sign this petition and demand the Honduran government seek justice for Nelson García.
Dear President Alvarado,
Less than two weeks after the murder of activist Berta Cáceres, another indigenous activist’s life has been snatched away by cowardly gunmen. The circumstances surrounding the shooting in Rio Chiquito, so soon after the forced eviction of 150 families there, is highly suspect to say the least. Already the repercussions are being felt, as people across the world become outraged at the disregard for human life in Honduras, especially when it comes to activists and indigenous people.
It is the responsibility of the Honduran authorities to investigate and prosecute those responsible, no matter who they are or who they received their orders from. I urge you to seek justice for the murder of Nelson García.
