Denounce Sheriff for Calling Most Rape Victims Liars

Take_Rape_Seriously_By_Womens_eNews

Target: Idaho Attorney General Lawrence Wasden

Goal: Denounce Sheriff Craig Rowland for saying that most rape accusations are false.

A county sheriff claimed that most rape accusations are false in response to a recently proposed Idaho law that makes it a requirement for local agencies to test every rape kit. Craig Rowland, the Idaho Bingham County Sheriff, also stated that the police should decide whether or not to send in rape kits for testing. These comments are completely unnecessary and show the lack of care that Rowland has for dealing with rape cases.

As a police officer, and especially as the sheriff of a county, you must hold yourself to a higher standard that includes thoroughly investigating every case. Rape is an especially serious allegation because it is something that is hard to prove. Only in recent years have rape victims whose rape was in question received any sort of strong support. Having a sheriff of a police department come out and say publicly that “the majority of our rapes that are called in, are actually consensual sex” while responding to new legislation that is merely requiring all rape kits get tested is truly alarming.

Even if the majority of his county’s rape cases are “actually consensual sex,” what does that prove? Rapists have historically always received the benefit of doubt over their victims. The point of the new legislation is to ensure that victims are taken seriously and that their rapists are caught. Sheriff Craig Rowland’s comments have only brought even more light onto how necessary this new legislation is. Demand that Sheriff Rowland is condemned for his disturbing comments.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Attorney General Wasden,

Bingham County Sheriff Craig Rowland’s comments about rape cases in response to a new piece of necessary legislation raise serious questions as to whether or not he is qualified for his position of sheriff. A law that would require all rape kits to get tested is very obviously necessary, and it is impossible to imagine how anyone would have a negative response to the proposed legislation.

However, Sheriff Rowland’s reaction to the proposed law was to comment on how rape allegations in his county are usually false. What Sheriff Rowland fails to realize is that his comments more accurately translate to the fact that there are probably many rape allegations in his county that have not been taken seriously.

What also makes Rowland’s comments horrifying is that they indicate that rape is usually assumed to be consensual sex by law enforcement, and that rape can therefore be easy to get away with. His comments would have been terrible regardless of the situation, but the fact they they came in response to a new law that could potential help catch rape victims is what makes them truly despicable. Sheriff Rowland has revealed his lack of care for rape victims, and you must condemn him for it.

Sincerely,
