Target: California Secretary of Education Arne Duncan
Goal: End San Bernardino Community College District’s overspending on travel funds.
A community college has reportedly been wasting a large chunk of money on travel expenses for its administrators. The board of trustees from the San Bernardino Community College District was approved for $175,000 worth of travel between August 2015 and October 2016. This is much more than almost any other district in the Inland Empire. This excessive travel budget is not justified, as it is one of the smaller districts with only 15,000 students.
Throughout the nation, college students bear the burden of immense tuition and fees. When they hear that their college has been approved for large funds, they are hoping that some of it will go toward programs that will help alleviate the burden. When they learn that the funds are being used to cover administrators’ disproportionate travel expenses, they are sure to be less than enthusiastic.
The North Orange County Community College District has 59,000 students, and it only spent $14,000 on travel expenses. What could San Bernardino possibly be doing with all these funds? The answer is simple–flying first class and staying at luxury hotels. One administrator even used funds to pay for his meals at Disney World while on a conference trip to Orlando. Students are sure to be overjoyed that their school’s funds are being used on dinners at the Happiest Place on Earth. And the worst part is that the district is expected to continue increasing its spending.
This corruption needs to end. California Secretary of Education Arne Duncan needs to do an investigation on the San Bernardino Community College District (and any other colleges suspected of overspending), and make sure that they never abuse funds again.
Dear Secretary Duncan,
What with the ever-increasing costs of college education, students want to be assured that colleges are using their funds appropriately. That is why they will not be pleased to hear that the San Bernardino Community College District has been abusing their travel expenses funds.
The district’s board of trustees has recently received $175,000 to cover all their travel expenses. This is more than almost every other community college district in the Inland Empire. Even districts that are much bigger than San Bernardino spend less on travel expenses–as little as $14,000.
The real corruption in all of this is how that huge budget is spent. Administrators are using government funds to fly first class and stay in five-star hotels when much cheaper options are easily available. Some of these funds are even used for personal expenses, as was the case for one administrator who used funds to pay for his meals at Disney World while on a conference trip. If action isn’t taken now, the district’s spending will only increase.
Students need to know that the Board of Education will not allow this misuse of funds to continue. Conduct a full-on investigation of the San Bernardino Community College District (and any other colleges suspected of overspending), and put an end to this fraud.
