Target: Attorney General Bob Ferguson
Goal: Punish the Grocery Manufacturer’s Association to the full extent of the law for violating campaign finance disclosure laws.
A food-industry trade group violated Washington state campaign finance disclosure laws according to a pretrial ruling by Thurston County Superior Court Judge Anne Hirsch. The Grocery Manufacturer’s Association (GMA) intentionally hid the source of most of the $22 million it gave to a campaign to fight an initiative that would have required all genetically modified (GMO) food, seeds and seed products to be labeled.
A large part of these funds came from food corporations that would have benefited from the initiative being defeated, and the GMA aimed to shield them from public scrutiny and criticism. The GMA needs to be held accountable and punished accordingly for its attempts to mislead the public. Sign this petition and call for the harshest penalties allowed.
Dear Mr. Ferguson,
The recent ruling regarding the GMA’s violation of campaign finance disclosure laws is the first step toward holding them accountable for their actions. The company shirked its responsibility and instead intentionally broke the law to keep food and beverage corporations happy.
If this trade group is not punished adequately for its deliberate concealment of the truth and violation of the law, it will set a precedent for tit and similar groups in the future that they can break the law with impunity and disregard for the public. I urge you to call for the maximum penalty possible in the GMA’s upcoming trial.
