Target: President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, President of Egypt
Goal: Free the teens and their teacher imprisoned for making a private video mocking ISIS.
Four teenagers face harsh prison sentences for making a private video mocking ISIS. They are just some of the many victims of Egypt’s harsh blasphemy law. Demand that Egypt release these children and protect freedom of speech.
The video shows them reciting words from the Quran and pretending to behead each other. Three of the teenagers face five years in prison and the fourth was sent to a juvenile facility. Their teacher was also sentenced to three years in prison for his involvement.
This is not the first time that Egypt’s blasphemy laws have been called into question. Twelve people were convicted of blasphemy last year. This outdated principle destroys the right to free expression in all forms. Demand the release of these teens and put an end to this archaic law.
Dear President El-Sissi,
Four teenagers and their teacher face harsh prison sentences for expressing themselves. The teens made a video parodying ISIS in an emotional reaction to terrorist activity. We demand justice for these children and the teacher who supported them.
The killing of Christians in Libya upset the four Christian teenagers. In response, they decided to make a video parodying ISIS. Their teacher filmed the private video as a way to support the grieving teenagers. Now, they are all facing lengthy prison sentences.
Children should not be punished for expressing themselves. We demand the release of these teenagers and their teacher at once.
