Target: Joel Fitzgerald, Chief of Police of the City of Fort Worth Police Department
Goal: Investigate allegations that a Fort Worth police officer launched an unprovoked attack against passing motorists.
A video recently uploaded on social media allegedly portrays yet another incident involving unnecessary violence from a member of a police force. The video, taken from a camera mounted on the helmet of a motorcyclist riding on a highway in Fort Worth, clearly shows an as-yet-unidentified officer emerging from his vehicle and spraying a canister in the direction of a group of bikers. The officer’s attack comes despite an obvious lack of danger; the motorcyclists maintain a safe distance from the officer and at no point in the video is there any evidence of provocation.
Police officers must be held to the same standard as civilians. At a time of heightened concern about police brutality and violence, incidents such as these only serve to make matters worse. If the situation were reversed and a civilian were to randomly mace police officers, the offender would be immediately arrested. The video clearly shows an officer demonstrating excessive force against a group of innocent motorists, and he must be held accountable for his actions.
Dear Chief Fitzgerald,
A recent video has surfaced in which one of your officers appears to launch an unprovoked attack against a group of motorcyclists passing by on a highway. In the video, the officer can clearly be seen exiting his patrol vehicle and spraying a substance from a canister. The officer’s attack is entirely unnecessary; the motorcyclists maintain a safe distance and appear to be traveling at a safe speed, and at no point in the video is there any reason for the officer to believe that his personal safety was at risk.
I urge you to fully investigate this matter and, if necessary, punish the officer for his misconduct. Though your officers provide a valuable service, they are still held to the same standards as a common citizen and to allow them to misbehave sets a dangerous precedent for future conflicts.
