Target: Paul Ryan, Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives
Goal: Enact federal discrimination protections for LGBT persons.
LGBT Americans are currently unprotected at the federal level by civil rights legislation and are therefore subject to discrimination in employment, housing, and public accommodation. Many local governments, state and municipal, have already moved to redress that wrong by enacting nondiscrimination ordinances. The Equality Act will apply those positive changes across America, ensuring that all our citizens enjoy the same protections.
Unfortunately, The Equality Act may never become a reality. In both the House of Representatives and the Senate, this important legislation languishes in committee and, according to some metrics, has a 0% chance of enactment. That’s where we come in.
By signing on to this petition, we can demand that the House of Representatives allows the Equality Act to move forward. Procedural gridlock is deplorable in all circumstances, but is unconscionable when equality is at stake. Raise your voice for equality before the law in our great nation.
Dear Speaker Ryan,
Equality is too important a principle to leave embroiled in procedural gridlock and partisan politics. We urge you to allow the Equality Act to move toward a vote and to encourage your colleagues to cooperate in bringing this important legislation to the floor.
The Equality act would extend the civil rights protections afforded to race, religion and nationality to sex, sexuality and gender identity. It would have protected two joyful mothers as they celebrated the birth of their son. It would have protected Jodielynn Wiley when she was denied emergency shelter. It would protect the 63 percent of LGBT people who report experiencing discrimination.
In addition to protecting our friends and neighbors, the Equality Act protects our business community. Many major corporations have joined the Business Coalition for Equality, recognizing that, as Best Buy declared, “Supporting workplace fairness and equal rights for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities is good for business. Quite simply, it’s the right thing to do.”
Preserving fairness and equality is both a moral imperative and a practical necessity. Please help move this legislation through the House of Representatives. Pass the Equality Act; we can’t afford not to.
