Regulate Oil Companies Responsible for Environmental Degradation

Niger_Delta

Target: Bayelsa State Governor Henry Seriake Dixon

Goal: Demand stronger regulation of the Agip Oil Company in Nigeria that is responsible for thousands of pollution incidents.

There have been about a thousand recorded incidents of pollution from the Agip Oil Company in the past year. The environment surrounding the Niger Delta has suffered tremendously from this pollution, and the Agip Oil Company needs to start taking responsibility. Henry Seriake Dixon, the Governor of the Bayelsa State in Nigeria, recently called for stricter regulation on oil companies.

The first step would be to restore the damaged environment by carrying out a massive cleanup of the region. The Niger Delta, which is used to provide drinking water for people in the area, has been corrupted by oil spills. Governor Dixon stated that the oil companies are a great source of revenue for Nigeria. However, they have also been the cause for the state of Bayelsa being “the epicenter of environmental degradation, in fact, what I call environmental terrorism.”

Not only should both the federal government of Nigeria and state government of Bayelsa start a massive cleanup of the Niger Delta, they should begin to go after the Agip Oil Company. Governor Dixon claims there is a double standard, using the infamous British Petroleum spill in the Gulf Mexico as an example. British Petroleum had to pay billions of pounds and dollars to restore the damage it inflicted, but oil companies like the Agip Oil Company, which pollute and destroy the environment every day, suffer no consequences at all.

Not only should the Agip Oil Company pay for the destruction it has caused, but it should also be more strictly monitored to help prevent future decimation to the environment. Sign our petition to demand regulation of this reckless company.

PETITION LETTER

Dear Governor Dixon,

The Nigerian Agip Oil Company has caused an enormous amount of damage to the environment around the Niger Delta. The large quantity of incidents of pollution should be a strong enough indication that something must be done. It should be held responsible for the destruction it has caused.

This kind of environmental terrorism has not only affected the ecosystem of Bayelsa, but it has also tainted the bodies of water that your people drink from. Getting the Agip Oil Company to pay for the destruction it has caused is one just one part of this issue. The second part is to prevent the company from causing even more damage in the future.

I understand that getting the federal government involved could take time. However, I do believe that the state government of Bayelsa should take immediate action and start to strictly monitor how the Agip Oil Company conducts its oil consumption process.

A thousand recorded incidents of pollution in one year is unacceptable and shows the lack of care the company hads for your state’s environment. I urge you to take action as soon as possible so that no more detrimental damage can be done.

Sincerely,
