Target: Charlie Baker, Governor of Massachusetts
Goal: Implement pollinator protection plan based on beekeeping experts’ suggestions.
A new plan to protect bees and other pollinators in the state was recently issued by the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources. Experts now say that roughly half of hives fail each winter, more than double the number that failed just a decade ago.
This plan, sadly, is based primarily on the state’s farmers’ misguided belief that they must use pesticides, specifically bee-killing neonicotinoids, on their crops. Instead, plan developers should listen to the suggestions from the beekeeper’s associations across the state.
Although the plan is not finalized, beekeepers across the state are outraged that decision makers seem to value a private farm lobby’s opinions over that of their expert knowledge. Demand this plan is rewritten using expert recommendations to truly help pollinators, not put more money factory farmers’ and chemical companies’ pockets.
Dear Governor Baker,
Beekeeping experts across Massachusetts need your help to protect the precious pollinators they care for. A new pollinator protection plan is in the works and currently includes measures that would help factory farmers and continue to permit use of pollinator-killing chemicals such as neonicotinoids. Beekeepers are horrified at the presumption that a private farmers’ lobby would be given priority over their expert knowledge and experience.
We demand the pollinator protection plan is rewritten to include only those measure which beekeeping experts believe will protect bees.
