Target: Mariano Rajoy, Prime Minister of Spain
Goal: Publicly denounce judge for posing offensive and victim-blaming questions to a rape victim during the trial.
A judge is under investigation for allegedly asking a victim of sexual abuse if she firmly closed her legs and closed off her female organs. Such questioning is degrading and unnecessary to prove an assault case. Questions of that nature blame the victim for her own rape and are even more shocking coming from a woman.
Spain’s General Council of the Judiciary has received a formal complaint from a gender rights group in Spain and has asked Judge María del Carmen Molina Mansilla for her version of the case. Demand Spain’s leadership denounce Judge Mansilla’s comments and set a precedent for protecting rape victim’s dignity.
Dear Prime Minister Rajoy,
A rape victim and the gender rights group the Clara Campoamor Association have accused Judge María del Carmen Molina Mansilla of humiliating and degrading questioning tactics. The General Council of the Judiciary is investigating the claim that Judge Mansilla asked the rape victim, “Did you close your legs firmly? Did you close off your female organs?” These questions blame the victim and do nothing to solve the case.
We demand you publicly denounce the judge’s comments and take a stance for victim’s rights.
