Target: Australian Minister of Agriculture, Barnaby Joyce
Goal: Put an end to the live export trade that results in the abuse, neglect, and horrific death of millions of animals.
The live export of animals is an extremely cruel trade in which animals endure weeks of transport with insufficient food, water and veterinary care, and often suffer abuse and brutal slaughter in places where the law does not protect them from cruelty.
Despite this, Australia continues to send live animals on long perilous journeys to the Middle East and Asia. A new report by the Department of Agriculture has listed close to 100 complaints made in the past five years and details severe cases of animal cruelty, such as cattle being still conscious after having their throats cut.
New reports surface every year detailing horrific abuse endured by Australian animals shipped live to be slaughtered abroad, but the government continues to allow this cruel trade. Major exporters are routinely found to have breached regulations, leading to unimaginable suffering for the animals, yet they often escape prosecution. Sign this petition urging the Australian government to put a definitive end to the cruel live export trade.
Dear Mr. Joyce,
It’s high time the incredibly cruel live export trade was stopped. New reports detailing horrific abuse of Australian animals shipped abroad surface every year, yet you continue to allow this horrific practice to go on. Major exporters are constantly breaching regulations, yet they are never held accountable for the unimaginable suffering caused to the animals they send abroad.
Australia is receiving increasing international condemnation for this horrific trade, and the majority of Australians are against it. We demand that you take urgent steps to end the live export trade once and for all.
