Target: CEO of Tesco Dave Lewis
Goal: Thank Tesco for donating any unsold food to local charities.
Tesco has recently agreed to donate all the unsold food from its stores to local charities and has come up with an initiative to eradicate all of its food waste. This plan is all a part of a nationwide pilot program called the Community Food Connection. The project has lasted over six months and has provided more than 22 tons of food to people in need—the equivalent of 50,000 meals.
Tesco is the second major retailer to announce its participation in the project. The supermarket has also asked other retailers to join the project and help their local charities as well. The chief executive of Tesco has said “We believe no food that could be eaten should be wasted. That’s why we have committed that no surplus food should go to waste from our stores.” Tesco has also partnered with FareShare, a company that is working to make food distribution easier for charities and staff. Sign the petition below to applaud Tesco’s efforts to bring food to hungry people and to put an end to the pointless waste of food.
Dear Mr. Lewis,
Roughly one-third of the food produced in the world for human consumption every year—approximately 1.3 billion tons—gets lost or wasted, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization. It has also been proven that there is more than enough food to feed everyone in the world and yet there is starvation. On top of starvation, one ton of wasted food results in 3.8 tons of methane, which is a much more potent greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide.
I believe that more supermarkets around the world should follow the example Tesco has set. Not only are you helping those who desperately need food, you are also reducing the amount of greenhouse gasses emitted into the atmosphere. You are also promoting local farms and teaching your community to be conscious of their food waste. By partnering with FareShare, you’ve even made it easier for charities to distribute surplus food to those who need them. I would like to applaud you for using your surplus food in a way that helps your community and by indirectly helping the environment by lessening the amount of food waste.
