Fight Discriminatory Anti-Gay Censorship on TV

Target: Chinese President Xi Jinping

Goal: Lift the unjust and discriminatory censorship of gay characters on Chinese television.

Officials in China are attempting to censor programs that include gay characters through a set of guidelines released by the government-supported TV Production Committee of the China Alliance of Radio, Film and Television and a trade group called the China Television Drama Production Industry Association.

The guidelines cite that no programs should “show abnormal sexual relationships and behaviors, such as incest, same-sex relationships, sexual perversion, sexual assault, sexual abuse, sexual violence, and so on.” The fact that same-sex relationships are grouped together with horrific concepts like sexual assault and incest is ridiculous and unfair.

The guidelines are not technically law, however many shows featuring gay characters have disappeared from streaming websites. Activists worry that these guidelines attempt to make show creators censor themselves in order to avoid trouble with the government.

These guidelines are not only offensive and discriminatory to gay people, they attempt to silence people through fear. Demand Chinese officials lift these ridiculous censorship guidelines.

Dear President Jinping,

Two government-backed organizations recently released guidelines meant to censor shows with gay characters on Chinese television. These guidelines equate same-sex relationships with incest and sexual violence.

These guidelines are offensive and discriminatory against gay people. These kinds of hateful rules cannot stand in today’s modern society, especially as they attempt to silence show creators from making whatever content they desire. I demand you lift these abhorrent guidelines.
