Target: President Juan Orlando Hernandez of Honduras
Goal: Free environmental activist being detained without charges even though he’s not a suspect in any crime.
An environmental activist is being detained despite the fact is not even a suspect in a crime and legitimately fears for his safety. Gustavo Castro Soto was shot twice last week during an attack that took the life of renowned Honduran environmental and Indigenous rights activist Berta Cáceres. He only survived the attack, which was at Berta Cáceres’ home, by feigning death.
Gustavo Castro Soto was the sole witness to the attack–Cáceres later died in his arms. While Gustavo Castro Soto escaped assassination, he was picked up by local law enforcement and detained for days without food or drink.
While members of Honduran law enforcement have claimed that the attack was a robbery gone wrong, colleagues and supporters of Cáceres and Gustavo Castro Soto himself have stated that it was an assassination. Cáceres had been threatened many times, most recently after a march last month. Over a hundred environmental activists have been killed in Honduras in the past 12 years.
After several days, Gustavo Castro Soto was given asylum in the Mexican embassy. However, after being escorted to the airport by the Mexican Ambassador, he was detained at the airport. Gustavo Castro Soto has given his testimony to the Honduran authorities, he has not been charged with any crime, and is not a suspect. There is no need to detain him, and doing so is a gross violation of consular protections. Sign our petition to demand Gustavo Castro Soto be released and allowed to return to his home country of Mexico.
Dear President Hernandez,
In the wake of the murder of Berta Cáceres, the sole witness to that murder, Gustavo Castro Soto, has been detained without access to food or water. Furthermore, when Gustavo Castro Soto sought to assert his right to leave Honduras, his consular rights were violated. Gustavo Castro Soto is neither charged with any crime, nor is he a suspect. He has given his testimony and has stated that he fears for his life.
We ask you as President of the Republic of Honduras to do everything in your power to ensure the safe and immediate end to the detention of Gustavo Castro Soto. He must be released and allowed to return to his country.
