Target: Jeffrey Davis, Board President of the Champlain Valley Expo
Goal: Keep petting zoo accused of beating elephants with bullhooks out of all future Vermont events.
Activists convened last week to protest an abusive traveling zoo being featured in Vermont’s Champlain Valley Expo. The R.W. Commerford and Sons Traveling Petting Zoo is known for being abusive to its animals and neglectful of their well-being. The zoo’s mistreatment of a 46-year-old elephant drew a multitude of protests from animal rights activists, including a petition published on ForceChange. The presence of this cruel petting zoo in Vermont, a state that prides itself on caring for wildlife, is unacceptable, and the Commerford Zoo must not be invited back in the future.
The Commerford Zoo has a long record of health and safety violations and dozens of citations from the U.S. Department of Agriculture for abusive behavior. Its animals are often denied sufficient veterinary care, and are kept in poor conditions that greatly shorten their lifespans.
Green Mountain Animal Defenders, a non-profit organization working for animal welfare and conservation, protested the petting zoo and gained public support in favor of abuse-free entertainment at the fairground. Sign the petition below to urge the Champlain Valley Expo to heed the protests and ensure that this cruel traveling zoo is never invited back to Vermont.
Dear Mr. Davis,
The R.W. Commerford and Sons Traveling Petting Zoo is abusive to its animals and must not be invited back to the Champlain Valley Expo. The traveling zoo has received dozens of citations from the U.S. Department of Agriculture for health and safety violations and mistreatment of its animals. It fails to provide proper veterinary care for these animals and keeps them in poor conditions that negatively affect their health.
I am urging you to heed the protests of Green Mountain Animal Defenders and their numerous supporters and find an abuse-free entertainment alternative for the Champlain Valley Expo in future years. Please take action to ensure that this cruel and abusive traveling zoo is never hosted again in Vermont.
