Success: New Law Prevents Overfishing

Target: Heraldo Muñoz, Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Chile

Goal: Thank the government of Chile for working to end overfishing and the resulting starvation of sea lions.

The government of Chile has recently made the decision to restrict the quantity of fishing that is legally allowed in order to prevent overfishing of marine life. Thanks to activists, including a petition on ForceChange, marine life such as sea lions that depend on fish will have a lower risk of dying of starvation due to overfishing.

One of the largest and most controversial restrictions was placed on the fishing of anchovies. Unfortunately, violent protests have broken out over Arica, a fishing village on the coast of Chile. The government does have a long-term plan in place that will help the local economy while also allowing the fish population in the area to stabilize. Hopefully with time, the plan will be able to support both the fishermen and the delicate ecosystem and no party will suffer a detriment.

By signing the petition below, you will help thank Heraldo Muñoz for assisting with the implementation of this policy, which will protect the delicate balance of marine life. Without this sea life, the entire ecosystem in which we survive will crumble.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Minister Muñoz,

Recent protests have broken out in fishing villages on the coast of Chile due to the new restrictions placed against overfishing. Though this is a challenging time, the government of Chile has a long-term solution that will benefit the fishermen in the long run while protecting the oceans from the dangerous practice of depleting marine life.

One of the greatest victims of the overfishing were sea lions. Hundreds of these innocent animals have washed ashore dead or dying of starvation in the past few years. It is vital that we no longer deplete the food supply of the animals with which we share common prey, which is why these new laws are so important.

I sincerely thank you for creating laws that restrict the fishermens’ capacity to overfish the anchovies and other sea life from off the coast of Chile. Please continue to enforce policies that protect the delicate balance of the ecosystem in which we live.

Sincerely,
