Reinstate Teacher Fired Over Stolen Private Photo

Target: Dr. David Eubanks, Union County Superintendent

Goal: Reinstate teacher who was fired after private photo allegedly stolen by student was leaked.

Leigh Anne Arthur, an engineering teacher, has been let go after a semi-nude photo of her was leaked to students in the school. She was a 13 year veteran of Union County High School in Union County, South Carolina. Allegedly, she left the room and while she was gone, a male student found her cell phone and took a picture of a saved Snapchat picture that had been sent to her husband.

There is no reason why Arthur should have been fired for this incident. The photo was obviously taken in private and meant for private. There is no way for her to have known that a student would go so far as to access her phone and take a picture of something on it. Even worse, the student then spread the picture around the school and posted it on social media.

A spokesperson for the school has said they have yet to decide if the student should be punished. Obviously the student should be punished, but more importantly, Arthur should be reinstated to her position. What a teacher does in private should not affect her employment in this way. It also sets a bad precedent, teaching the male students that they can get away with slut-shaming in this manner. Please write the superintendent and tell him to reinstate the teacher.

Dear Dr. Eubanks,

We are writing to demand that you reconsider the firing of Leigh Anne Arthur. She has taught at Union County High School for over a dozen years, and the manner in which she was fired was both inappropriate and incredibly disrespectful for someone who is likely already suffering embarrassment.

As superintendent, you need to be setting an example to the students of Union County, and you are not setting the right one. By firing Arthur, you are devaluing the victim instead of the student who committed the act. Arthur did nothing wrong, and what she does in private outside of the school should not affect her employment.

The student went into Arthur’s phone without her permission and widely shared a private photo that he did not have the right to. The student is obviously the one who should be punished. Please reconsider firing a veteran of the school and reinstate her immediately.
