Target: New York State Commissioner of Taxation and Finance Jerry Boone
Goal: End the sexist and unjust tax on tampons for women in New York.
New York State enforces a tampon and sanitary pad sales tax that is unfair and sexist against women. The New York State Department of Taxation has a complete double standard for products used by men and products used by women when it comes to taxation of various medical products.
Items like chapstick, adult diapiers, foot powder, Rogaine and face wash aren’t subjected to a tax, but tampons and sanitary pads are. The latter products are used almost exclusively by women, which reveals the sexist double standard. There’s no sensible justification for these items to be taxed while other items are not.
This unjust tax has cost the women of New York a copious and unnecessary amount of money that men were never subjected to. Urge officials to end this ridiculous tax and stop punishing women for their biology.
Dear Commissioner Boone,
Your department has been taxing women unfairly for years. The tax on tampons and sanitary pads is sexist and unfair for women. Similar items for men aren’t taxed like this, and these items are necessities for any woman with a period.
There’s no logical justification for taxing these items over others. If anything, those other unnecessary products should be taxed while tampons and sanitary pads are exempt. I urge you to end this sexist and discriminatory tax on tampons and sanitary pads.
