Fire Cop Accused of Shooting Unarmed Black Teen

Target: New York Chief of Police William J. Bratton

Goal: Remove Officer Richard Haste after his alleged shooting and killing of an unarmed black teenager.

Officer Richard Haste allegedly gunned down 18-year-old Ramarley Graham in his Bronx apartment four years ago. The case has since drawn the attention of several civil rights advocates. Despite the attention the case has picked up, federal prosecutors have decided not to pursue criminal charges against the police officer and claimed that there was “insufficient evidence.” The evidence in question that was presented indicated that Haste believed Graham had a firearm and was reaching for it.

Officer Haste claimed that he saw Graham tugging and adjusting his waistband and reported that he saw the butt of a gun on the teen. There is no evidence to support that claim. The officer later claimed in the official report that Graham had run from him toward his home, a claim that was later retracted by police after surveillance footage showed Graham walking instead.

Eventually the police officer kicked down the door to Graham’s apartment and chased him into the bathroom, shooting him multiple times in the chest, according to reports. Sign the petition below to demand the immediate termination of Richard Haste.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Chief Bratton,

Ramarley Graham was allegedly wrongfully killed after Officer Richard Haste decided to follow him to his apartment. Initially, the officer had no reason to follow the teenager into his home. He first saw Graham leave a bodega near his apartment late at night and decided to pursue him after he saw what he believed to be the butt of a gun in his waistband. The officer even went so far as to lie, claiming that Graham was running when in reality he was walking, probably unaware that he was being pursued.

New York has recently been the center stage of police brutality and the excessive force police officers use against minorities. This year, Officer Peter Liang was convicted of manslaughter after shooting an unarmed black man named Akai Gurley. The year before that, a grand jury declined to charge the New York officer responsible for the death of Eric Garner.

The grand jury of New York once again refuses to prosecute another police officer. It sends the message that black lives do not matter in New York. I urge you to terminate Officer Richard Haste and to prove to the black community of New York that black lives do matter to the NYPD.

Sincerely,
