Target: Fort Wayne Police Chief Garry Hamilton
Goal: Find person responsible for murdering three young Muslim men.
Three young men in Fort Wayne, Indiana, were found dead of multiple gunshot wounds after police responded to a distress call. The three men were Mohamedtaha Omar, 23, Adam Kamel Mekki, 20, and Muhannad Adam Tairab, 17, still legally a minor. The three young men were Muslims, and their families all hailed from Central Africa. The house they were found in is known as a party house for young people of African descent.
Local police have deemed the deaths homicides, but they have ruled out the possibility of a hate crime. A spokesperson for the police has said that they do not know if the boys were religious. While we do not know anything about the crime yet, it does seem like a targeted attack, and they were allegedly shot in an “execution style,” although that has yet to be confirmed.
A family member of one of the boys expressed sadness over the incident, saying that they had come to America to escape violence, only to meet it here as well. Between the lower middle-class status of the families, their African descent and Muslim heritage, there seems to be reason to believe it was a hate crime of some sort. Support the police’s investigation into the murders and ask them to consider it a hate crime.
Dear Chief Hamilton,
We are writing because we are devastated to hear of the tragic murders of Mohamedtaha Omar, Adam Kamel Mekki and Muhannad Adam Tairab in Fort Wayne. We hope that the department is able to investigate and catch the person or people that are responsible for the heinous crimes.
We are also surprised to learn that the department has ruled out the possibility of hate crimes. The young men are all African, from Muslim families and from lower middle-class households. While we may not know much about the crime as it stands now, we are confused as to why the possibility of a hate crime has been ruled out.
This is obviously a tragic event for the families of the three young men, one of them even still a minor. We want to show support for the families in this tough time, as well as support the department in their ongoing investigation, and to ask the department to consider labeling this as a hate crime. As it is now, the signs point to a targeted attack against these three young men.
