Target: Hillary Clinton
Goal: Tell Hillary Clinton to apologize for calling black children “superpredators” and saying that “…we have to bring them to heel.”
A 1996 video of Hillary Clinton, calling black children predators and proclaiming that “…we need to bring them to heel,” has been getting attention. Two activists confronted Clinton for her inflammatory remarks at a fundraiser where Clinton was quick to dismiss them rather than deliver the apology the activists asked for.
Clinton later gave a response to the Huffington Post saying that she wouldn’t use those words today but still did not give a real apology for demonizing black children. The unfair demonization and criminalization of black children is a long-time issue that has effects still seen today.
Those effects were seen when Missouri police officer Darren Wilson shot and killed unarmed, black 18-year-old Michael Brown and later justified it by saying Brown looked like a demon. Those effects were seen when Cleveland police officer Timothy Loehmann shot and killed black 12-year-old Tamir Rice and police later called Rice “menacing” and “a 12-year-old in an adult body.”
Clinton’s words were extremely damaging, and she must be held accountable for that. Tell Hillary Clinton to apologize for making horrific remarks about black children and to take responsibility for some of the damage those words have inflicted on black communities.
Dear Mrs. Clinton,
You were recently confronted by activists to apologize for inflammatory remarks you made in the past about black children, calling them “superpredators” and declaring that “…we need to bring them to heel.” Rather than apologizing, you essentially ignored these activist, and they were escorted out. Given a second chance to apologize, you instead championed yourself as an advocate for black communities and said that you wouldn’t have used those words today.
The demonization of black children is still an issue we are dealing with today, and you used your powerful platform to spread that idea. Those comments have affected black communities, yet you refuse to acknowledge that and take responsibility for your damaging words. I urge you to apologize for these awful remarks about black children.
