Target: Richard Piwowarski, Andrean High School Principal
Goal: Issue a formal apology to Bishop Noll High School for allowing racial epithets at basketball game.
An Indiana high school has been heavily criticized after a basketball game with a rival team turned into a racist political stand. Andrean High School students found it acceptable to bring fatheads of Donald Trump to the game and chant phrases like “build that wall,” and “no comprende.” This may seem out of context if one didn’t know that the rival high school, Bishop Noll, is predominantly of Latino ethnicity.
Since the rise of Donald Trump, white nationalists all over the country are speaking up for their bigoted values and hypocritical stances. We cannot allow these types of repulsive behaviors to continue, especially in a place of education. Students, no matter their race, should feel safe and valued at school and school events.
Though school administrators have recently come together to discuss plans moving forward, we should not allow this incident to pass by without apology and admittance of wrongdoing. Since no adults stepped in to correct the behavior, it is the school principal who should apologize for failing to provide safety and respect to the Bishop Noll students.
Please sign this petition urging the administration of Andrean to apologize to the student body of Bishop Noll for the disgusting and unwarranted racist behaviors of the offending students.
Dear Mr. Piwowarski,
I am writing this letter to you in embarrassment and disappointment. Recently, your students verbally attacked students of another “rival” school simply because they were largely Latino. Not only were the students allowed to spew racist remarks throughout the game, but they were also allowed to hold up rude posters.
As you know, the posters included blown-up pictures of Donald Trump’s face, an ESPN sign that read “deportes,” a play on words which means both sports and a variation of the verb deport. Your students chanted messages like, “build that wall,” “speak English,” and “no comprende”. These are obviously negatively charged statements and behaviors that communicate hate, intolerance, hypocrisy, bigotry and ignorance toward the Latino community. There is simply no other way for these behaviors to be interpreted.
I urge you to issue a timely and extensive apology to the entire student body of Bishop Noll. Perhaps you can use this unfortunate moment to encourage dialogue and healing between the two student bodies. You have the platform and opportunity to be an agent of positive change in your community and I would encourage you to do so.
