Save Starving Sea Lions by Ending Illegal Fishing Practices

Target: Heraldo Muñoz, Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Chile

Goal: Hold fisherman accountable for overfishing in order to end the starvation and death of sea lions.

More than 100 newborn sea lions have died within months. This incident is part of a wide range of die-offs taking place along the coast of Northern Chile. Climate change and overfishing are to blame. Put a stop to overfishing and save the sea lion.

Hundreds of sea lions are estimated to have died so far. The majority of them are newborns with the umbilical cord still attached. Scientists believe that starvation is the cause of this mass die-off. Warm waters have stripped the ocean of phytoplankton, the main food source for sardines and anchovies. This, coupled with overfishing, has exterminated the bulk of the sea lion’s diet.

While measures have been taken to limit fishing in Chile, they are not enough. Fishermen continue to surpass the legal limit and do not report their catch. Sign below and demand that all fishermen be held accountable.

Dear Minister Muñoz,

Hundreds of sea lions starved to death along the coast of Chile. Overfishing and rising water temperatures have depleted their food source and put them at risk. We demand that all fishermen be held accountable for their impact.

Over 100 sea lions washed up along the Chilean coast, many of them newborns. Overfishing has depleted their food source and limited their ability to thrive.

Your efforts to combat overfishing have not gone unnoticed. The “Friends of the Port State Measures” agreement brought the world together to combat this problem. However, more must be done to hold fisherman accountable. We demand that strict penalties are put in place for all who fish outside of the legal limit.
