Target: President Barack Obama
Goal: Thank President Obama for his efforts to end ineffective and damaging abstinence-only education.
Federal funding for abstinence-only education will be eliminated if President Barack Obama’s proposed budget goes through. Obama has cut a $10 million grant that is earmarked for abstinence-only education programs in public schools. He has instead proposed to reallocate that money to programs like the Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program. States will still have the option of choosing abstinence-only education, but the funding for it would not come from the federal government.
Abstinence-only education, a largely religious form of education, aims to teach teens to wait until marriage to have sex. It does not teach anything about the biology of sex, nor does it include anything about the dangers of teen pregnancy or STDs. It is a program that has proven to be completely ineffective, often leading to an increase in teen pregnancies, not a decrease.
President Obama has fought against abstinence-only education before. He has previously cut some funding for it, although it has never passed. It likely will not pass again, but Obama has shown that even in his last year in office, he is willing to keep fighting for the platforms he believes in. Write to Obama and support him for attempting to cut this dangerous and unnecessary program.
Dear President Obama,
We are writing to thank you for cutting the $10 million grant that goes toward abstinence-only education from the 2017 budget. We are proud that you have continued to stand up against this unnecessary form of education, even in your final year in office. Even if your previous efforts have been unsuccessful, you have continued to fight for this change.
Abstinence-only education have been proven to be unsuccessful at best, and dangerous at worst. By not teaching teens the realities of sex, they are only being driven to make mistakes. Teen pregnancies have increased under abstinence-only education, and these kids are left with little knowledge of sexually transmitted diseases. We thank you for proposing to reallocate the funds to the Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program, which has proven more effective.
We hope that this reallocation of funds will get passed this year, and that states see that this type of sex education is doomed to fail. We applaud your efforts to cut the federal funding for an outdated and ineffective method of education.
