Target: Prime Minister Mark Rutte
Goal: Congratulate the Netherlands for banning the use of wild animals in circus performances.
The use of wild animals in the circus has been banned in the Netherlands, answering many an activist’s dream. Bears, giraffes, elephants, lions, tigers, primates and zebras will no longer be held captive for people’s entertainment.
While many may lament the loss of the acts, it should be understood a circus is no place for these large animals. They are wild–they are meant to be in large, open spaces where they can move about. In the circus, they go through rigorous and often abusive training by people who wish to instill fear in them to dance, sing and play along with human performers. The audience, often unmindful or unknowing of their suffering, watch these performances with awe and joy.
This ban is thanks to the tireless efforts of Wilde Dieren de Tent Uit, an association of Dutch animal welfare organizations. The association has also offered to help circuses find species-appropriate housing for their animals. While it is unlikely these animals can immediately, if ever, be released into the wild, the aid of reservations and rescue facilities remains.
The Netherlands isn’t alone in its bans on detaining wild animals for entertainment. Nine European countries have joined in banning the use of these animals in circuses. Perhaps, in time, all wild animals will be free from the horrors of the entertainment industry. Sign to applaud the Netherlands for being another supporter of animal welfare by banning wild animals from their circuses.
Dear Prime Minister Rutte,
Animal rights activists are fighting hard for the well-being of animals, and it is great to see those efforts are not in vain. Many see animals only as a form of entertainment, and that is especially true in circuses. Learning of all the abuses these animals go through for the sake of a performance is eye opening. However, many still do not care. They think only of the money brought in by circuses and their animal acts. So it’s amazing to see more and more countries banning the use of wild animals in circuses.
Thank you for putting animal welfare first. Thank you for putting your foot down and banning wild animals in the circus. Thank you for ensuring that future generations of elephants, lions, primates and others will not be spent in cages or abused for the sake of entertainment.
