Stop Alleged Abuse of Animals at Fairs

Target: Tom Vilsack, Secretary of the United States Department of Agriculture

Goal: Ban animals from being abused in fair performances and retire them to proper sanctuaries.

Animals are allegedly being grossly abused in fair performances across America. We need to take action to better ensure these animals are no longer used for entertainment purposes.

Stunts reportedly include monkeys being chained to dogs’ necks and forced to race each other in an event called the Banana Derby and releasing grizzly bears into the suburbs for five-day time periods. Animals are likely highly stressed while performing.

Attaching chains to the monkeys and dogs is extremely risky because an accident could cause the chain to strangle and kill both animals.  Releasing a bear into a highly populated area is also extremely irresponsible not only because it is dangerous to the people living in the area, but because it puts the bear in danger of being shot at by a frightened individual and ingesting toxic trash or chemicals.

The CEO of Fair Productions, Brian Schuman, has been cited by the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) for many things, including not providing the animals with proper enrichment or enclosures. Demand Schuman be required to retire any animals being used in these reprehensible acts to reputable sanctuaries and that he further be banned from using animals in future shows. These animals do not deserve to suffer for the sole purpose of making a greedy CEO a profit.

Dear Mr. Vilsack,

Several animals are allegedly being grossly abused in fairs across the country. It is important that these animals no longer be used for entertainment purposes in order to ensure they will be able to live the rest of their lives in peace.

Monkeys and dogs are apparently forced to race while chained to each other and grizzly bears have reportedly been released into metropolitan areas for five-day time periods. Chaining a monkey to a dog’s neck is dangerous, as the chain could end up strangling both animals in an accident. In addition, releasing a bear into a highly populated area is both stressful for the bear that is not being allowed to thrive in a more natural environment and also dangerous to citizens.

Although Brian Schuman has already been given several citations for things like not providing animals with proper enclosures, this matter needs to be taken much more seriously to ensure the safety of these animals. I therefore urge you to require that Schuman retire all of his animals to proper sanctuaries and to also ban him from using animals in future fair shows if it is found he is guilty of committing these heinous acts. Many more innocent animals will likely suffer and die if no action is taken.

  1. Brian Schuman Please stop making a buck off animal suffering, get a job with some integrity PLEASE? And folks do NOT buy tickets or attend any event that puts cash in this guys pockets. He should retire these poor creatures and be forced to pay the cost to keep them comfortable since he paid to have them removed from their habitat.
