Target: Barnaby Joyce, Minister of Agriculture, Australia
Goal: Close cruel factory farm where pigs are reportedly beaten and left to die in filth.
Animals are shown being beaten and otherwise abused in a disturbing video allegedly taken at Yelma Piggery outside of Adelaide, South Australia. The video, which was released by Animal Liberation New South Wales and sent in by an anonymous tipster, shows workers kicking, slapping, and striking pigs with sticks. Piggery staff are seen riding sows around in their pens during the artificial insemination process and clipping the tails and ears of screeching piglets without administering pain relief. This cannot be allowed to continue. We must take action now to save these suffering pigs.
Conditions inside the facility are horrid, with pools of maggot-infested urine and feces covering much of the floor. One sow, which was reportedly left in one of these pools, fell into the waste pit and was left to die in the putrid sludge. Animals are seen with open wounds and untreated injuries. Inside the birthing pens, dead and dying piglets are seen trapped in enclosure bars or in pools of filth. Dismembered piglets and severed body parts litter the floors right next to live animals, creating a breeding ground for disease and infection.
These shocking conditions are all too common in the Australian meat industry. These actions, considered cruelty if done to a cat or a dog, are perfectly legal when done to farm animals. In order to bring justice to the millions of pigs that suffer through this treatment each year, it is important that the operators of this facility are punished and that animal cruelty laws are improved to better protect farm animals. Sign the petition below to demand that this barbaric farm be closed, and demand that the staff responsible for neglect and abuse are punished to the fullest extent of the law if found guilty.
Dear Minister Joyce,
A video recently released by rights group Animal Liberation New South Wales shows a pig farm where employees are beating and neglecting the animals. Allegedly taken at Yelma Piggery in South Australia, it shows some sows being kicked, slapped, and battered with sticks while others are mounted and ridden by farmhouse employees. Conditions at the facility are vile, with pools of urine and feces, maggots, and dead and dismembered animals littering the floors.
This type of cruelty, while shocking, is commonplace in the Australian meat farming industry. In order to prevent it, perpetrators must be punished and animal protection laws must be improved. We, the undersigned, demand that this barbaric facility be closed and that its operators are punished.
