Target: Mohd Hasdi Husin, Director of Malaysia’s Terengganu Wildlife Department
Goal: Find and penalize two people accused of stealing fangs from a tiger killed by a moving vehicle.
Two people have been accused of removing two fangs from a tigress after she was struck to death by a vehicle. The pregnant tigress was crossing a highway in East Malaysia when a vehicle moving across the expressway rammed into her, causing her death. Seven witnesses, including the driver of the vehicle and the highway personnel on duty that day, have given statements to the Terengganu Wildlife Department pointing them in the direction of two people who allegedly removed and stole the tigress’s two left fangs on the day of the accident. This theft is a crime under the Wildlife Conservation Act, and the people responsible must be caught and punished accordingly.
Tigers are extremely valuable in illegal trading, and are often slaughtered and poached for their bones and pelts. Typically, organized gangs are responsible for poaching tigers as part of a massive wildlife trade run by international crime syndicates. Their teeth can be sold for a high price as well, and while the tigress’s death was an accident in this case the removal of the fangs was clearly deliberate. Even if they were not stolen in the interest of making a profit through trade, it is almost worse to think that they were stolen simply as a souvenir. Photos of the suspects with the tigress have circulated on the internet, and the Terengganu Wildlife Department is currently organizing a hunt to discover their identities and track them down.
The mutilation of the animal’s corpse was disrespectful and illegal, and the men responsible for stealing the fangs must be found and brought to justice. Sign the petition below to encourage the Terengganu Wildlife Department to step up the hunt, and urge them to take every possible measure to locate and penalize the guilty parties.
Dear Mr. Husin,
The suspects accused of stealing two fangs from a tigress after she was killed by a moving vehicle cannot be allowed to go free. The tigress was pregnant at the time of her death, and her corpse should have been respected and properly cared for. The removal of two of her fangs was both disrespectful and illegal under the Wildlife Conservation Act, and the people responsible must be brought to justice.
The poaching of tiger parts for the purpose of illegal trade is a serious danger facing the threatened species, and even an isolated incident like this one in which the tigress was already dead only contributes to the larger problem. I am urging you to continue the hunt for the suspects until they are located and penalized. Please take every possible action to seek justice for the tigress and make sure that the guilty parties are identified and held responsible for their actions.
