Applaud Palm Oil Company’s Commitment to Sustainability

Target: President Director of PT Astra Agro Lestari Widya Wiryawan

Goal: Applaud palm oil producer for committing to sustainable and eco-friendly practices.

The second largest palm oil producer in Indonesia has signed onto the Indonesian Palm Oil Pledge (IPOP) and has committed to sustainable practices. The IPOP initiative is a commitment by the world’s major palm oil growers that includes stopping all deforestation within supply chains and promoting better livelihoods for workers while remaining competitive.

The initiative was launched at the United Nations Climate Summit in September 2014 and is backed by the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce. The company Astra Agro Lestari has signed after pressure was brought on them last year by environmental groups for their widespread deforestation and human rights violations. Deforestation by palm oil companies has been blamed for many of the forest and peatland fires that burned in Indonesia in the second half of 2015.

Astra joining the pledge means that they have agreed to stop developing on peatland and forest areas that are considered to have a high carbon stock. They must also ban the use of fire to clear land and must provide social services and technical aid to the smallholders in their supply chain. They also will work alongside the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce in supporting policies for sustainability in the palm oil industry.

With a large company like Astra joining the IPOP initiative, it will now be easier to influence decisions in regards to environmental and economic sustainability for palm oil cultivation. Applaud their decision to sign and honor this commitment.

Dear Mr Wiryawan,

The decision by Astra Agro Lestari to join the Indonesian Palm Oil Pledge and become a more ecologically sustainable company is to be applauded. By joining the initiative, Astra has shown that it has listened to the concerns of environmentalists and human rights campaigners in regards to their practices.

Deforestation for the purpose of palm oil cultivation has left many areas of Indonesia vulnerable to forest and peatland fires. This move to protect forests in the supply chain, as well the agreement to protect the rights of workers and smallholders involved, will serve as an inspiration to other companies. Astra can now use its position as the second largest palm oil producer to effect real change to policies in order to promote sustainability and ensure Indonesia’s palm oil remains economically competitive. I applaud Astra’s decision to join the Indonesian Palm Oil Pledge.
