Target: Dean of Students Office Staff
Goal: Applaud decision to allow transgender students to use their preferred name and gender on college records.
Contrary to the stance many Christian universities have traditionally taken, DePaul University has passed a policy that will allow students who are gender nonconforming to use their preferred name and gender on college records. The policy contradicts Church teachings on human sexuality and statements made by the Pope and several U.S Bishops, but DePaul University eagerly tossed the statements aside to focus on creating an environment based on love, respect, and inclusion.
Ever since the policy was passed, the Universities LGBTQA department has been working on plans to open more gender-inclusive bathrooms as well as gender-inclusive housing. Students are already seeing the effects of the new policy, as many students have already changed their names and genders in the schools online portal. The change is reflected on class rosters, directories, official transcripts, and diplomas. DePaul’s LGBTQA Student Services department has stated their approval of the policy, pointing out that it promotes artistic expression and challenges students to explore all aspects of their identity. Sign the petition below to applaud the Univeristy for passing a policy that includes students of all, or no, genders.
Dear Dean of Students Office Staff,
Hopefully other universities will follow your example. By allowing gender nonconforming students to choose their preferred name and gender, you are setting an extremely positive precedent. Many gender nonconformers suffer throughout their lives because of the strict laws and policies surrounding gender. Many states in the U.S will not allow a person to change their gender without the person getting sex reassignment surgery. Unfortunately, sex reassignment surgery is expensive and not many doctors specialize in it, forcing patients to travel to other states and even countries to receive the surgery.
Promoting the idea that a person doesn’t need to get physical surgery to be able to legally identify with a gender is healthy for the gender nonconformer. They are being reassured that they are the gender they identify with, regardless of their anatomy. Despite the teachings of the Church, your school is teaching its students that no matter the gender, a human has the right to be accepted. This policy will help many transgender students with body dysphoria come one step closer to accepting and loving themselves. Thank you for passing this policy
