Target: Pope Francis
Goal: Applaud Pope Francis’ comments that building a wall on the Mexican and United States border is not Christian.
Pope Francis took a stand allegedly in response to Donald Trump’s statements about building a wall on the United States and Mexican border. He publicly said that “a person who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not building bridges, is not Christian.”
Trump was obviously not happy with this statement. In return to Trump’s accusations about not understanding the situation fully and being a “political person,” Pope Francis then said that “Aristotle defined human person as ‘animal politicus,’ so at least I am a human person.” Applaud Pope Francis’ efforts to be a good person and his recognition that a wall solves nothing in the long run.
The Pope made an excellent point that building bridges is what really needs to be done. A wall is never going to hold back everyone and will only breed resentment between Mexico and the United States. What really needs to be done is to address the root causes of the immigration. This will cost more in the short term, but without it we will always face politicians who want to build walls.
Building a wall will be expensive, wasteful, and sends a very uncomfortable message to the rest of the world. Not to mention that it will likely only raise the prices for desperate people crossing over and increase the stakes for the cartels–we all know how increased risk makes something even more valuable.
Outlawing all alcohol during the Prohibition did not turn everyone into teetotalers but instead created a thriving illegal trade and advanced the growth of organized crime. Do we really want to be the type of country that builds a wall? Sign our petition to stand with Pope Francis against dangerous anti-immigrant sentiment.
Dear Pope Francis,
Thank you so much for your public statements about immigration. Donald Trump’s ideas for building a border wall are short sighted and will only bring about more misery. There is never going to be a solution unless Mexico fixes the problems that are causing people to emigrate, and if the entire North American continent sweeps into nationalism, we will likely only see rising resentment between the two countries. Donald Trump accused you of being a pawn to Mexico, but Mexico doesn’t like losing their valuable workers anymore than the United States likes uncontrolled immigration.
There is no denying that borders are incredibly important. However, walls do not make for comfortable relationships with your neighbors. A wall will never hold everything negative back and what we really need to do is address the root causes, not add to the problem. How will a wall reduce cartel influence or corruption? Please continue to remind people that walls only separate people, while what we really need is unity.
