Target: 85th Battalion of the Philippine Army
Goal: Thank soldiers for rescuing and caring for a pair of rare, endangered eagles.
While patrolling, soldiers came upon a pair of rare, endangered Philippine hawk eagles abandoned in a hut. When found, the eagles were tied up in separate cages and appeared extremely weak and undernourished. The soldiers of the 85th Battalion of the Philippine Army personally cared for the birds for three days before turning them over to wildlife services.
Despite being sighted on at least 12 islands in the Philippines, little is known about the Philippine hawk eagle, perhaps due to its propensity for perching among the highest branches of the forest, out of the reach of researchers. This mysterious and striking bird, like many endangered species, has seen a decline in its population due to human impacts such as habitat loss. The Philippine hawk eagle is at home in the kind of subtropical forests that are currently experiencing mass deforestation; mining, trapping and hunting have also had impacts.
In an environment that is hostile and threatening to their existence, it especially crucial that endangered animals are valued and cared for. Thank these soldiers for the thoroughness that led to the discovery of the endangered birds, and for rescuing the animals from a horrific living situation that would likely have ended in death. Additionally, commend them for going above and beyond the call of duty to personally nurse the animals back to health, a step that makes clear the soldiers’ appreciation of these animals and their well being.
Dear 85th Battalion of the Philippine Army,
We would like to commend you for your actions upon discovering a pair of endangered Philippine hawk eagles during a routine patrol. When you found them, the eagles were tied up in separate cages, extremely weak, undernourished, and afraid. Not only did you remove them from this neglectful situation and ensure their safety, you personally cared for and nursed the hawk eagles back to health before transferring them to the appropriate agency.
The extra step you took in caring for the animals is to be commended above all. We appreciate the fact that you valued these animals’ lives and well being, which is so important in a world that has been hostile and threatening to their very existence. Thank you for going above and beyond the call of duty to help these endangered species.
