Praise Nike for Dropping Homophobic Representative

Target: Mark Parker, Chief Executive Officer of Nike, Inc

Goal: Applaud Nike’s quick dismissal of Manny Pacquiao after his derogatory comments about the LGBT community.

Nike has cancelled an endorsement contract with renowned boxer Manny Pacquiao after he made homophobic comments on a Filipino television show. Pacquiao, also a politician running to be re-elected to the senate in his home country of the Philippines, made the comments as part of an interview on his political positions. He compared LGBT persons to animals, making untrue claims that homosexuality does not occur in the animal kingdom and concluding that gay and lesbian people are therefore “worse than animals.”

The apparel and footwear giant was quick to terminate Pacquiao’s contract and condemn his derogatory remarks. Despite the eight-time world champion’s repeated apologies on social media websites including Twitter, the company assured the public that he is no longer on its endorsement roster because of his “abhorrent” comments. A spokesperson for Nike said that the company “strongly opposes discrimination of any kind and has a long history of supporting and standing up for the rights of the LGBT community.”

These remarks, while made to demonstrate a political viewpoint in a mainly conservative Christian country, were disparaging toward millions of members of the LGBT community across the globe. By dropping Pacquiao’s endorsement deal, Nike has taken a strong stance against his blatant intolerance of LGBT persons. Sign the petition below to applaud Nike’s apology and dismissal of Manny Pacquiao in response to his prejudicial remarks.

Dear Mr. Parker,

Nike recently announced that it has cancelled an endorsement deal with professional boxer Manny Pacquiao after he made callous remarks on Filipino television. During an interview with a news station for his senate campaign, he made insensitive remarks implying that homosexual people are “worse than animals.” Despite several attempts by the fighter to apologise on social media, Nike quickly dropped him as a representative and denounced his intolerant remarks.

By quickly condemning Pacquiao’s insensitive remarks and cancelling his endorsement contract, Nike has taken a tough stance against this shocking and blatant homophobia. By doing so, the company has shown solidarity with the LGBT community. We, the undersigned, praise the inclusive and supportive stance that your company has taken in the face of this unfortunate situation.
