Target: Andrew Cuomo, Governor of New York
Goal: Shut down the harmful nuclear facility in New York after a dangerous toxin leak.
A nuclear facility just 40 miles from New York City recently leaked one of the most potent radioactive carcinogens into the groundwater. Tritium, the chemical that escaped, is a radioactive isotope of hydrogen known to be most carcinogenic when contaminating drinking water and can also cause birth defects. Millions of people live in New York City, not to mention those who live even nearer to the 10-mile evacuation zone around the Indian Point power plant, and these people should not be put at risk because of a dangerous leak that could have been prevented.
Samples were taken at testing wells around the power plant that revealed astonishingly high radioactivity levels, with one well’s radioactivity increasing almost 65,000 percent. According to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, an out-of-service pump resulted in a buildup of water which eventually overflowed from a containment drain. The overflow then leaked out of the building and into the ground, allowing the contaminated water to flow into the Hudson River.
Worst of all, this leak is only the most recent in a series of groundwater contaminations at Indian Point power plant. There were similar instances of tritium leaks in both 2009 and 2014, one of which prompted a federal investigation. Indian Point is not the only power plant to experience such a problem; according to a 2009 investigation, approximately 75 percent of the 65 nuclear power plants in the U.S. have leaked tritium at least once.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the state of New York are currently investigating the events surrounding the leak, but simply discovering the cause is not enough. The only way to ensure that this dangerous mistake never happens again is to shut down the Indian Point power plant. Sign the petition below to urge Governor Cuomo to close the nuclear facility and preserve the health and safety of the residents of New York.
Dear Governor Cuomo,
The recent radioactive tritium leak into the groundwater from Indian Point power plant cannot be allowed to happen again. The groundwater in that area flows into the Hudson River, which travels through both New York City and Jersey City, putting millions of people at risk from the chemical. Tritium is known to be most carcinogenic when contaminating drinking water, and also causes birth defects.
Investigations into what caused the leak and why it remained undetected for so long will not protect the health and safety of the residents of New York. This dangerous leak is only one of many groundwater contaminations that have occurred at Indian Point, and the only way to ensure that this safety hazard never happens again is to close down the power plant.
I am urging you to take a strong stance against the Indian Point nuclear facility. Please take action to shut down the power plant and protect the people of New York.
