Target: California Governor, Jerry Brown
Goal: Have an independent agency test neighborhood affected by massive gas leak’s air quality before residents move back.
Three months after a massive gas leak near a California neighborhood, the leak was finally plugged. However, no one is sure that the air quality is safe. The air must be tested to ensure that residents will not be moving back into a toxic environment. While the gas company and Division of Oil, Gas and Geothermal Resources are capable of doing tests, the deep mistrust within the community means that an independent company should do the research. Demand that Porter Ranch’s air quality be tested by an outside source to ensure public safety.
Since the old well started leaking methane in October, thousands of residents have been placed in temporary housing outside the city. This was only after Governor Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency. When the leak first occurred the local gas company did not inform the public. Once residents were notified, the company stated that the leak did not pose a risk for homeowners. As this disaster has now been compared to the BP oil spill, there is no denying the environmental and health hazards it has caused. Since the beginning of this disaster the people of Porter Ranch have been lied to. That is why it is so important to get testing done by an outside agency that the people can trust.
According to estimates, the leak was spilling 100,000 pounds of methane per hour. Methane gas can cause anything from dizziness to severe vomiting and respiratory problems. With the Porter Ranch community having high levels of exposure, they deserve to know that when they move back their health will no longer be at risk. Demand that their air quality be independently tested by the EPA or the South Coast Air Quality Management District.
Dear Governor Brown,
Now that the Porter Ranch gas leak has stopped, residents need to know for certain that it is safe to move back home. I urge you to have either the EPA or the AQMD conduct research on the quality of air in their community. The citizens are skeptical of the gas company that lied to them about the original danger they were in. Residents can not feel safe if a report is done by the gas company and not an outside source.
Let Porter Ranch residents feel confident when they move back home. They have already been through so much; they deserve to have their health and safety guaranteed.
