Justice for Native American Woman Shot Dead by Police

Target: Donald Ramsdell, Tacoma City Police Chief

Goal: Allow for an independent investigation of the death of a woman killed by police under suspicious circumstances.

A Native American woman was recently shot dead in her car after police suspected a fugitive to be in the passenger seat. The shooting victim, Jacqueline Salyers, was a previous domestic abuse victim and it is likely that she was actively being victimized by the alleged fugitive.

Allegedly, upon recognizing the fugitive, the police officers approached the vehicle and at that point, the vehicle began moving toward them. The officers then shot multiple times at the car, the driver was hit and the passenger ran away. The next thing reported is the arrival of the EMT and the announcement of Ms. Salyer’s death.

There are a few missing details from this story that would shed much more light on the sequence of events. It is unclear whether the car was facing the police car or facing away from the police car, the fugitive was not located, the shooting victim allegedly accelerated toward the officers, and it is reported that Ms. Salyer’s body was moved multiple times before she was pronounced dead. These details are crucial in reconstructing exactly what happened that night.

Sign this petition to demand that the Tacoma City police chief release the body for an independent autopsy, as well as allow for an independent investigation of the entire event.

Dear Chief Ramsdell,

I am writing this letter in order to demand that an independent investigation be conducted in the case of Jacqueline Salyers. As you know, Ms. Salyers was reported to be in the company of a fugitive at the time of her death, which was allegedly caused by an officer’s discharged weapon. That being said, there are so many other blurry details that have not been addressed, including the direction the car was facing, whether or not the car was moving, how many times the body was moved, and the mysterious autopsy results.

As you can imagine, this is quite a disturbing and traumatic experience for the family and friends of the victim. They have little reason to believe the sparse and confusing details of the incident without being totally involved in the resolution of this case. There are far too many cases of missing and murdered Indigenous women, and also too many cases of police brutality against Native Americans for the family to simply accept the one-sided, bare minimum description of events that they have been given.

Jacqueline’s family has right to know exactly what happened that night, as well as access to an autopsy conducted by an unaffiliated coroner. As a highly criticized public figure, it is imperative that you are transparent in communication with both the public and the shooting victim’s family. Please allow for an independent investigation and autopsy so that justice can be served and Jacqueline’s family can have peace of mind.
