Target: Salah El-Din Helal, Minister of Agriculture, Egypt
Goal: Close cruel zoo where animals are allegedly so hungry that they eat each other or starve to death.
An African baboon is suffering greatly after zookeepers allegedly allowed its cage-mates to cannibalize it. A photo posted on Facebook by a concerned visitor of the Zagazig Zoo in Egypt shows gaping wounds on the animal’s legs. The large black scabs and absence of bandages suggest that the wounds have gone untreated for quite a while. Demand that this alleged abuse stop now.
The post, which has since gone viral, was coupled with accusations that the zoo animals are severely underfed. According to a witness, the zoo staff will wait until visitors offer them money to feed the animals, some of which have allegedly starved to death or been forced to attack and eat their cage-mates. The visitor also reported a foul scent and squalid conditions.
The Zagazig Zoo, like many others in Egypt, has seen a stark decline in quality of care in the past decade. None of the zoos in Egypt even hold World Association of Zoos And Aquariums memberships.
Allowing these animals to remain in these neglectful and filthy conditions would be cruel. In order to ensure the health and well-being of the animals in the Zagazig Zoo, it is imperative that they are removed from the zoo and placed in sanctuaries properly equipped to provide food and veterinary care. Sign the petition below to demand that the Zagazig Zoo be shut down, and that the operators face charges for their neglect.
Dear Minister Helal,
Photos of an African baboon suffering from large open wounds recently went viral on Facebook. They were allegedly taken at the Zagazig Zoo in Egypt, where visitors claim that animals are so hungry that they are starving to death or eating each other.
These cruel and neglectful conditions are completely unacceptable. For the sake of the animals’ health, they must be immediately removed from the zoo and transported to rescue facilities where they can receive veterinary care and a proper diet. We, the undersigned, demand that the cruel Zagazig Zoo be closed, and that the owners face legal action for their neglect.
