Target: David Boren, University of Oklahoma President
Goal: Stop housing baboons in research facilities that allegedly cause them to die and relocate them to more suitable environments.
Hundreds of baboons are being used in laboratory experiments at a major university. We need to take action to try and ensure these innocent animals will be immediately retired.
The University of Oklahoma plans to close their research facility and end the experimentation that is being done on these animals within the next few years. Unfortunately, the lives of 350 baboons are still in jeopardy, as they are also available for lease and sale to other facilities that want to perform research on them. Sadly, a majority of the research conducted is paid for by taxpayer dollars.
Fifty-one baboons from the university allegedly died for various reasons, including being run over while being driven to another facility. The animals were also reported to have died because caretakers were not able to provide them with proper care.
The baboons currently being experimented on may be moved to other research facilities after the research center at the University of Oklahoma closes. Demand these animals be retired to accredited zoos or sanctuaries. They have already done their time living in deplorable conditions; they should not have to continue suffering.
Dear President Boren,
Several baboons are still living at your university’s research facility and are also being sold and leased to other facilities for experimentation purposes. These animals need to be retired to proper zoos or sanctuaries, as they have already spent a good deal of their lives being poked and prodded.
Continuing to use 350 baboons for research purposes is simply unethical, especially when one considers that 51 of these animals were thought to have died because of caretaker neglect. Even if the animals are moved to top research facilities with the most responsible caretakers, they will still likely experience immensely painful deaths. Furthermore, unsuspecting taxpayers who may be against animal research should not have to continue funding your facility or the moving of these animals to other such similar places.
These baboons deserve to be immediately retired. They have spent a majority of their lives being tested on and they don’t deserve to die in such a dismal environment. I therefore urge you to immediately retire all of the baboons from your university’s facility to proper zoos or sanctuaries. They have lived most of their lives serving researchers; they deserve to live the rest of their lives in peace.
