Target: Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan
Goal: Stop officer from suing the family of a young man he killed.
A Chicago police officer is counter-suing the family of a teen he shot and killed, claiming “extreme emotional trauma.” The officer, Robert Rialmo, shot and killed 19-year-old Quintonio LeGrier after LeGrier allegedly came at him with a baseball bat. He was responding to a distress call when LeGrier charged at him and swung multiple times, though he never actually hit Rialmo.
Rialmo has said he did not believe his use of deadly force was unnecessary, although he did shoot LeGrier six times. He also accidentally struck and killed LeGrier’s neighbor, 55-year-old Bettie Jones. The families of both victims have filed separate lawsuits against the city. Rialmo’s lawsuit claims that he has suffered “permanent” emotional and psychological damage from shooting and killing LeGrier and Jones.
The lawsuit is a countersuit to the one LeGrier’s father presented to the city. Rialmo is suing for $50,000 to a ridiculous $10 million. His use of deadly force should not have happened, and he should not be asking for money from the family. LeGrier’s family has been through enough trauma because of Rialmo already, they should not be held accountable for any trauma that the officer is going through. Write to the attorney general of Illinois and let her know she should have this case thrown out.
Dear Attorney General Madigan,
We urge you to throw out the case brought up by Chicago officer Robert Rialmo against the LeGrier family. He shot and killed their son, as well as their neighbor, and now he is suing to be compensated for emotional trauma. It is a ridiculous case and the family should not have to pay the man who took their son.
Quintonio LeGrier allegedly ran at Rialmo with a baseball bat and swung, although he never made contact with Rialmo. While Rialmo was threatened, he did not have to use deadly force. Another young life was taken by an officer who didn’t think twice before firing a weapon. He accidentally killed the neighbor, Bettie Jones, as well.
Rialmo is likely going through trauma right now after ending two lives, but that does not mean the LeGrier family should have to pay for it. They have lost a son, and they should be the ones to get any compensation, not the officer who killed Quintonio. Please see to it that the officer does not sue the family of a man he killed; he has taken enough from them already.
