The Kimberly-Clark corporation has recently made the decision to post ingredient lists of their feminine hygiene products. Thanks to activists, including a petition on ForceChange, women are now able to make informed decisions about product use, significantly decreasing their risk of toxic shock syndrome.
Lauren Wasser of California recently lost her leg to toxic shock syndrome after using Kotex tampons, a product manufactured and distributed by the Kimberly-Clark corporation. The Natural Balance tampons actually had synthetic ingredients that increase absorbency, while also increasing the user’s risk of toxic shock syndrome. The product’s “natural” label led Wasser to believe she was using a product that didn’t carry such a risk, which is how the syndrome developed to an extent that she lost her leg.
A Kimberly-Clark spokeswomen recently said to CBC news, “For additional transparency and in response to recent consumer questions, we have posted an ingredients page for U by Kotex products on the product stewardship section of our website.” Feminine hygiene products already have information about the product and its use included in the packaging; however, the specific ingredients are now made even more transparent.

Lauren Wasser of California recently lost her leg to toxic shock syndrome after using Kotex tampons. Due to the fact that tampons contain many synthetic materials to increase absorbency, consumers must be informed about how they use these products. The tampons used by Wasser were labeled natural, and since then, consumers have been granted increased information about tampon ingredients.
Encouraged by advocacy groups and consumers, Kimberly-Clark has made the decision to post ingredient lists of pads and tampons. This not only allows women to make informed decisions about the types of products they purchase and use, but it also enables them to make healthy decisions about how they use these products. With informed consumer use, the risk of toxic shock syndrome should drop significantly.
I sincerely thank you for making the ingredients of all your feminine hygiene products completely transparent for all consumers. Please continue to enforce policies that allow consumers to be informed about your products and their own health and safety.
