Demand CDC Remove Sexist Alcohol Recommendation

Target: Tom Frieden, M.D., Director of the Center for Disease Control

Goal: Remove sexist recommendation that all women of childbearing age abstain from consuming alcohol.

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) recently published a sexist recommendation that all women of childbearing age abstain completely from alcohol consumption. This recommendation not only treats women as though their only purpose is to bear children, but it also removes all responsibility from men regarding unwanted pregnancies and fetal alcohol syndrome.

According to the CDC’s own findings, five-year-old children whose mothers consumed low to moderate quantities of alcohol while pregnant demonstrated no problems with neuro-developmental function. Even though about 50 percent of pregnancies are unplanned, if a woman consumed a moderate amount of alcohol while unknowingly pregnant, there is only a small risk of that consumption affecting her child, which makes the recommendation that all women of childbearing age abstain from alcohol unwarranted.

Another major reason why the CDC made this recommendation was due to the fact that alcohol consumption increases the risk of sexually transmitted diseases, unwanted pregnancy, and violence. This unfairly places all the blame on women. The alcohol consumption of men is an equal contributor to all of these risks, if not even more so since sexually transmitted diseases and unwanted pregnancy are occasionally the result of rape. It is unfair to make women solely responsible for these risks.

By signing the petition below, you will demand that the director of the CDC remove this sexist and unwarranted recommendation. Women cannot be viewed as simply baby-making entities, but instead as equal, autonomous individuals.

Dear Director Frieden,

The Center for Disease Control has just issued a recommendation that all women of childbearing age abstain from consuming alcohol. This recommendation is only backed by dubious and controversial data, and it creates inequality of the sexes. Women cannot be treated as though their only purpose is to incubate a fetus, and we demand that this recommendation be removed.

The CDC developed these warnings due to the direct effect of alcohol consumption of pregnant women and the development of fetal alcohol syndrome; however, according to the CDC’s own findings, low to moderate consumption of alcohol by pregnant women showed no developmental effects in children of five years of age, making this recommendation unwarranted.

I am urging you to remove this recommendation that is backed solely by controversial data. Please take actions to enforce policies that treat the sexes equally, instead of restricting the activities of women.

That’s not how I read it, but even within its context it is still somewhat over the top.
