Save Dogs From Getting Ear Damage Due to Bows

Target: Wayne Pacelle, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Humane Society of the United States

Goal: Warn pet owners about the dangers of having bows tied on animals’ ears.

A dog recently had to get its ears surgically removed because bows allegedly put on by a groomer caused a great deal of damage to their functionality. We need to take action to ensure similar tragedies can be avoided in the future.

Patricia Self took the dog to the veterinarian’s office after she noticed that its ears were black. She also noted that her dog’s ears were “matted up and real hard.” When the veterinarian examined Meggie the dog, she concluded that the ears had been damaged because rubber bands had gotten stuck around the ear flaps. Unfortunately, the damage was so bad that a good portion of dead tissue from each ear had to be removed. According to the veterinarian, the incident could have been avoided if the bows had not been placed on each side of the dog’s head in the first place.

Demand that groomers be legally required to warn pet owners that having bows put in an animal’s hair could lead to everlasting consequences such as this. People need to know their pets are safe when they take them to a grooming facility.

Dear President Pacelle,

A dog’s ears had to be cut off because bows that were allegedly put in its hair during a grooming session prevented circulation from taking place. It is important that groomers be required to warn pet owners about such possible tragedies in order to hopefully avoid other similar heartbreaking situations.

Patricia Self took her dog to the veterinarian’s office shortly after she noticed her dog’s ears looked abnormal. The veterinarian indicated that the dog was in distress because rubber bands from bows had gotten tightly wrapped around each ear flap. She also commented that this would have never happened if Meggie’s groomer had left bows out of the animal’s hair.

Many owners decide to have bows put in their animal’s hair at the groomer’s because they think it makes their animals look cute. Sadly, they are unaware that such actions could lead to lifetime consequences.

Therefore, I encourage you to suggest and to advocate for a law being put into affect that would require groomers to warn pet owners about the potential consequences of having bows put in their animals’ ears. If such steps had been taken in this particular case, this little dog would probably still have his ears intact.
