Target: Robert McNair, Owner of the NFL
Goal: Apologize for reportedly promoting negative racial stereotypes and ignoring an important issue.
When recently asked about the potential offensive effects of the Washington D.C. “Redskins” team name, NFL owner Robert McNair reportedly replied without an answer and, instead, stated an indirect reference to alcoholism in the Native American community. With no self-proclaimed stance on the issue of the team name, he allegedly remarked that he respected Native Americans he grew up with but did not respect the way they held their liquor.
This type of comment, in reply to a relevant controversy, shows Mr. McNair’s position on the team name and its effects on people without him even having to say as much. He directly related an entire race of people to alcoholism when the subject at hand was the offensive racial slur that he apparently approves of as a team name.
Please sign this petition below to demand that Mr. McNair publicly apologize to all Native Americans for reportedly perpetuating a damaging and hurtful stereotype.
Dear Mr. McNair,
Your recent interview with the New York Times included a pertinent and relevant question about an offensive and hurtful term: Redskins. Instead of answering the question in a supportive or disapproving direction, you ignored the question and instead decided to talk about your encounters with Native Americans that had nothing to do with the team name.
Your experiences with drunk or disorderly Native Americans had no place in the interview addressing the Washington D.C. Redskins franchise. In fact, by ignoring the question and bringing up negative and stereotypical behaviors, you reinforced the idea that there is justification for continuing to utilize an offensive racial slur as a team name.
What would have been more helpful is at least addressing your position on the issue and using your platform for advocating positive change. If you do not wish to do that much, please at least apologize for perpetuating negative stereotypes surrounding Native Americans that are both harmful and toxic.
