Protect Freedoms of Speech and Assembly

new-york-by-ag1st

Target: Andrew Cuomo, Governor New York

Goal: Overturn law that prohibits the state from doing business with companies boycotting United States allies.

Doing business with companies that are boycotting countries the U.S. considers allies could be made illegal if a bill passed by the New York State Senate becomes law. The bill further requires the state maintain a list of individuals and companies who boycott, or encourage others to boycott, such entities. This list serves the same purpose as the Red List did during the McCarthy Trials and prevents important work from being done.

Civil rights organizations around the country use boycotts to raise awareness and bring about change. By discouraging company boycotts, New York, and other states that have passed similar legislation, is preventing those activists from exercising their freedoms of speech and assembly.

The right to speak freely and the right to assemble, guaranteed in the U.S. Constitution, are essential to the liberties we enjoy as Americans. We owe allies our loyalty, but not the revocation of our own freedoms. If we are willing to accept their revocation, we have already lost them.

Tell the New York governor he must veto this legislation.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Governor Cuomo,

Recently passed legislation makes it illegal to for the state to do business with companies that boycott U.S. allied countries and requires the state maintain a list of anyone who violates this law. This law is a horrendous violation of constitutional rights and must be overturned. Just as the efforts to prevent expression of opposing viewpoints during the McCarthy Trials turned neighbor against neighbor and deeply wounded the country, so too would this list of boycotters.

Nationwide, civil rights organizations use boycotts to raise awareness and create change around the globe. Preventing these activists from using this powerful tool violates their freedoms of speech and assembly and severely impacts their ability to function as agents of change. We must not be willing to sacrifice our own freedoms to protect our allies from protests by American citizens.

We demand this law be immediately overturned.

Sincerely,
