Keep Police Dog With His Family

Target: Joe Matthews, Mayor of Marietta, Ohio

Goal: Keep police dog with his retiring partner and the rest of his family.

A police department is refusing to let a police dog retire to live with his human partner. Matthew Hickey has worked with the Marietta Police Department for 30 years, and for the past three years he has been working side by side with his canine companion Ajax. Hickey has even stated that Ajax “is a family member, one of my children.” He was hoping on his day of retirement that Ajax would be joining him, however the police department had a different idea.

Ajax is six years old which means he could continue working as a police dog for another six years. He is considered police “property” and is treated as such. Officer Hickey then decided to compromise with the department and was prepared to pay them $3,500 so Ajax and himself could retire together. When the day came, the department changed their mind.

Officer Hickey made a comprise and held his side of the deal. Sign this petition and tell the mayor of Marietta to retire Ajax with his rightful owner.

Dear Mayor Matthews,

Matthew Hickey has been a loyal officer in the city of Marietta for the past 30 years. For the last three years, Officer Hickey has been lucky enough to work along side his canine companion Ajax. Ajax has become a part of Officer Hickey’s family.

Officer Hickey is retiring and was hoping to retire with his friend Ajax. However, Ajax is six years old and could continue working for the police department for another six years. Officer Hickey made a compromise with the department and was willing to pay them $3,500 for Ajax. However, at the last minute, the department backed out of the compromise.

Ajax is part of Officer Hickey’s family and moving him to another officer and location would be incredible stressful for Ajax. It is time he is treated as a living being rather than property.
