Target: Uuiversity of Albany President Robert Jones
Goal: Identify and expel or arrest group accused of hate crimes.
Three black female students of the University at Albany, a division of the State University of New York, have come forward and said they were victims of hate crimes. The three women allege they were harassed and assaulted while riding a bus associated with the college. The women have said that they were beaten and insulted by a group of ten to twelve white men and women.
The students all received minor injuries, and one was taken to a local hospital. With a group of that size accused, it seems as if this was a targeted attack, and should be viewed as a hate crime. The company that owns the bus will be sharing video evidence with local police, who have said they are taking the case “very seriously.”
One of the victims, Asha Burwell, announced the alleged crime on Twitter, and added that other people on the bus witnessed the attack and did nothing to help. The university president, Robert Jones, released a statement and cut a trip short to return to campus and focus on the alleged crime. Urge him and the local police to identify the alleged attackers and expel them if they are students of the university.
Dear President Jones,
We urge you to identify and take action against the alleged perpetrators of a vicious hate crime. As you have heard, three black female students of Albany were verbally and physically attacked on a bus by a group of ten to twelve white men and women. One of the women was taken to the hospital and may have suffered a concussion.
With a group of that size and the victims all being black, it seems apparent that this was a targeted attack. It should be viewed and treated as a hate crime. In your statement, you said the university has a zero tolerance for racial intolerance and gender violence, but youshould noy shy away from the term “hate crime.”
Please work with local police to identify the alleged men and women responsible for this attack. If they are students, please take swift action and expel them immediately. As president, the university is obviously important to you, and having those men and women on campus would put a stain on the college’s name.
