Target: Baron Waqa, Nauru President
Goal: End prison-like conditions for Myanmar refugees and their children.
Refugees fleeing Myanmar for Australia are winding up in prison-like internment camps unable to pursue the better life they hoped for. The Australian government indicates they’re not allowing any additional refugees into the country and ships them to Nauru or Papua New Guinea instead, where they wind up in perpetual purgatory. They further indicate that the horrifying conditions on Nauru are Nauru’s responsibility.
Detainees on Nauru tell reporters they fear for their safety and health. The open-air camps are surrounded by fences, incredibly hot, and infested with rats and cockroaches. Children are denied access to safe schools and wind up bored and suicidal. There have been numerous documented reports of sexual and physical violence against both children and adults in the camps. Many of the families in this purgatory have been waiting years to hear if they will receive asylum.
Tell Nauru they must provide safe, clean, appropriate housing for refugees and must process their asylum requests in an efficient manner.
Dear President Waqa,
There are currently 537 people detained in the refugee camp on Nauru. Sixty-eight of them are children under the age of 18. These asylum seekers fled their home country in search of a better life. Instead, they’ve wound up in a purgatory-like limbo where they fear for their health and safety. Many have been waiting years to be granted asylum.
Detainees report infestations of rats and cockroaches as well as documented incidents of physical and sexual violence. Children further report feeling that they are constantly being watched by the guards. Furthermore, children also lack access to safe schools and many have lost hope and feel suicidal.
We demand better living conditions for these refugees and more efficient processing of their asylum requests.
