Target: Flint Mayor Karen Weaver
Goal: Stop making Flint residents pay for toxic drinking water.
Water in the city of Flint, Michigan is unfit for human consumption. It has been poisoned with lead and other contaminants since 2014 and citizens are being forced to pay for it. Even with Flint now getting their water from a different source, the pipes are still corroded and can leach toxins into the water. We must stand with Flint residents and say that no one should have to pay for water that is unsafe to use.
While most people have resorted to drinking only bottled water, residents still need to use water for basic hygiene and sanitation. Residents have no choice but to use the contaminated water. The city is once again choosing profits over people by shutting down water service to those who have stopped paying their bills. One Flint resident and founder of the campaign, “Water You Fighting For?”, Melissa Mays stated, “To be told our water was safe to drink when it wasn’t is criminal, and to continue to have to pay for it is unconscionable.”
Michigan residents, Food and Water Watch, and millions of other Americans are calling for a stop to water bills and forgiveness of past due bills until the water is safe for consumption. Newly appointed Mayor Karen Weaver has vowed to address the city’s water problems. Let’s hold her to it and support citizens over companies.
Dear Mayor Weaver,
I am calling for all past due water bills in Flint, Michigan to be forgiven and current bills ceased until water is safe for consumption. No one should have to pay to have a basic human right, clean water, taken from them, nor should they be limited to not having water for sanitation purposes.
You have come into office at a dire time for Flint, Michigan. I hope you will do the right thing and fight for the people when so many others have been silent. Please put a halt on water bills and don’t let anyone’s water be shut off because they refuse to pay for poison.
