Stop Attacks on Tribal Community

brazilian native tribe family

Target: Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff

Goal: Stop gunmen hired by ranchers from shooting and attacking tribal communities.

A Brazilian tribal community is coming under fire by gunmen hired by ranchers in the Mato Grosso do Sul area of Brazil. These attacks are believed to be retaliation for an attempt at reoccupation of land by the Guarani, who have rights under Brazilian and international law to their ancestral lands. The Guarani have had their land stolen from them in order to make room for ranches and plantations.

Ranchers regularly pay groups of armed men to arrive en masse and chase the Guarani off their land. Their tactics include burning the homes in their villages and murdering the tribal leader in order to demoralize the tribes. The current spate of attacks started when approximately ten truckloads of gunmen arrived in the community known as Takuara and, since then, the attacks have been taking place nightly.

The DOF (Departamento de Operações de Fronteira) border security are present but are not interfering. In fact, the Guarani have reported that the DOF is actually supporting the ranchers. Call for the Brazilian leadership to get involved and protect this tribe and their ancestral homes.

Dear President Rousseff,

The attacks carried out against the Guarani people in Mato Grosso do Sul are a travesty. Even with Brazilian and international protections and rights provided by the law to their ancestral lands, they have been under attack. Hired gunmen employed by ranchers and plantation owners have opened fire on the Guarani and set fire to their homes. Meanwhile, the DOF forces stand by and let it continue, even providing support for the ranchers.

This aggressive expansion into the protected Takuara community’s land is a crime against these people and should be treated as such. Their human rights are being discarded in favor of destruction of their lands and their freedom to live peacefully. Action must be taken on the part of the government and police forces to step in and protect these people, as well as catching and punishing the violent perpetrators. I urge you to take action and responsibility for the safety of the Guarani people from hired thugs and the threat of violence on their land.
